High-Temperature Coatings: Supracoat, Alucoat And Supracoat Putty

Furnace hardware, heating coils, engine and exhaust parts, launders and moulds all need a coating that stays put when the temperature goes up and the metal around it expands. Pyroflux India makes the Supracoat family of ceramic-based coatings in Noida in three temperature classes, for 750, 1250 and 1750 °C service in high-temperature, high-pressure applications; Alucoat, a launder and mould coating for aluminium extrusion, DC and continuous casting plants; and Supracoat putty, a paste that fills cracks and gaps in furnaces, insulates and protects heating coils, and works as a general-purpose sealant from 750 to 1750 °C. Where molten aluminium, zinc or glass must not wet the surface, a boron nitride coating is usually the better answer, and we will say so.

Choosing

Which Coating For Which Surface

  • Metal that gets hot and must not scale or corrode: Supracoat in the class above your peak temperature.
  • Refractory that is spalling or cracking: Supracoat MX as a surface coat; Supracoat putty for the cracks.
  • Induction or resistance coils: Supracoat putty as an insulating, protective layer; in forging lines see SupraForge.
  • Launders and moulds carrying aluminium: Alucoat, or a boron nitride coating where non-wetting is the main requirement.
  • Anything molten aluminium, zinc, magnesium or glass must not stick to: boron nitride, not a ceramic coating.
Application

Surface Preparation Decides The Life

  1. Remove scale, oxide, old coating and oil; a blasted or wire-brushed surface gives the coating something to key into.
  2. Stir well and apply thin coats by brush or spray; let each coat dry.
  3. Cure as the data sheet directs, bringing the part up to temperature gradually on the first heat.
  4. Inspect and touch up at each maintenance stop rather than waiting for failure.

Frequently asked

Common Questions

What temperature does Supracoat MX take?

Up to 1750 °C in service. Supracoat HT is rated to 1250 °C and Supracoat to 750 °C; choose the class above your peak temperature.

Can Supracoat be used on engine and exhaust parts?

Yes; the 750 °C class is formulated for high-temperature, high-pressure duty on metal parts such as engine, exhaust and coil components.

What is Supracoat putty for?

Filling cracks and spaces in furnaces, insulating and protecting heating coils, and sealing in high-temperature environments; it ranges from 750 to 1750 °C.

Is Alucoat the same as a boron nitride coating?

No. Alucoat is a protective launder and mould coating; boron nitride coatings add non-wetting to molten aluminium. Many casthouses use both: Alucoat as the base and BN where metal contact is heaviest.

Do you supply a technical data sheet and SDS?

Yes, per grade, by email within one working day of a request.
