Spuncote die coatings for centrifugal casting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
In centrifugal casting the metal meets a spinning, pre-heated steel die, and the coating on that die decides three things at once: whether the metal flows evenly along the length, whether gas from the coating ends up in the casting, and whether the finished pipe or sleeve strips cleanly. Spuncote is Pyroflux India’s range of water-based die coatings for centrifugal casting, formulated to give a semi-permeable coat with minimum gas evolution, smooth metal flow and easy stripping. Three grades cover the alloys: alumina-silicate for grey iron and non-ferrous, alumina for non-ferrous and low and high alloy steel, and zircon for the most demanding alloy steels.

Five grades, chosen by the alloy and the die
| Grade | Refractory filler | Cast it for | Supplied as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spuncote 100 | Alumina-silicate | Grey iron and non-ferrous alloys | Water-based, ready-for-use suspension |
| Spuncote 200 | Alumina | Non-ferrous alloys and low and high alloy steels | Water-based, ready-for-use slurry |
| Spuncote 300 | Zircon | Low and high alloy steels; cylindrical castings in the most demanding alloys | Water-based, ready-for-use slurry |
| Wallcote 300 | Zircon | Centrifugal castings where a zircon slurry is specified | Water-based slurry |
| Wallcote 100 | Graphite | Centrifugal castings coated with a dry graphite powder | Powder coating |
The three Spuncote grades are supplied ready for spraying and dilute readily in water for brushing or swabbing. Wallcote 300 is the zircon slurry alternative and Wallcote 100 a graphite powder coating for dies that are dusted rather than sprayed. Data sheets with the working density and coverage are sent on request.
What the coating does on a spinning die
- Semi-permeable, low gas. The coat lets mould gases escape through the die vents instead of into the metal, so the pipe is sound and free of non-metallic inclusions.
- Traction for the metal. The coated surface gives the molten metal grip as the die spins, so it spreads evenly and smoothly along the length instead of slipping and laminating.
- Stripping. The casting releases cleanly from the die, which is where the production rate comes from: no chiselling, no die damage between pours.
- Surface finish. A uniform coat prints a uniform skin; the finished pipe needs less machining.
On the die
- Clean the die of the previous coat and pre-heat it; Spuncote is formulated for application to a pre-heated die.
- Spray the ready-for-use coating evenly along the rotating die; for brushing or swabbing, dilute with water as the data sheet directs.
- Dry the coat thoroughly with a gas torch or by flaming before the pour; a damp coat is the main source of gas defects.
- Pour. After stripping, inspect the coat and recoat where it has worn; a full strip-and-recoat is needed only when the die is cold or the coat has built up.

Which Spuncote grade for grey iron pipes?
Spuncote 100, the alumina-silicate grade. It is the standard choice for grey iron and for non-ferrous centrifugal castings.
Which grade for alloy steel?
Spuncote 200 (alumina) covers non-ferrous and low and high alloy steels; Spuncote 300 (zircon) is the grade for the most demanding alloy steels and for cylindrical castings where penetration or reaction with the die coat has been a problem.
Can we brush or swab instead of spray?
Yes. All three grades are supplied ready for spraying and dilute with water for brushing or swabbing. Apply to a pre-heated die either way.
Does the coat have to be dried?
Yes, thoroughly, with a gas torch or by flaming. The low gas evolution of Spuncote depends on the coat being dry when the metal arrives.
What pack sizes?
30 kg buckets and 50 kg drums. Trial quantities are available for a first run.
Do you send a data sheet?
Yes. The Spuncote TDS and SDS go out by email within one working day of a request.
Tell us the alloy and the die; we will recommend the grade
Alloy and casting type, die size and pre-heat, and how you apply the coat today. That is everything we need to recommend Spuncote 100, 200 or 300 and send a trial pack.
