BN Spray, Suspension, Wax Stick Or Powder: Which Form Does Your Job Need?
Hexagonal boron nitride is sold in four forms, and the right one depends on three questions: how big is the area, how hot is the surface when you apply it, and what equipment do you have. An aerosol is for touch-ups, awkward geometry and anyone who is not a coatings technician. A suspension is for large areas and for every-cycle spraying on a running press, diluted to the film you want. A wax stick is for tooling that is already hot and in the press, where a liquid would flash off or run. A powder is for compounding into greases, plastics and thermal pastes, for mould dusting and for electrostatic dummy-block systems. Pyroflux India makes the first three in Noida and supplies the fourth; the table below is the short answer.

Pick By Area, Temperature And Equipment
| If you need to… | Use | Why | Pyroflux product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lubricate a dummy block, shear or billet end that is already hot | Wax stick | Applied by hand at working temperature; no equipment, no overspray, nothing to change on the line | BN wax sticks |
| Spray every billet on a running press | Water-based suspension | Runs through the siphon lance you have; dry film in the time it takes the water to flash off | Pyrolube 20 |
| Coat a launder, trough, ladle or large mould | Suspension or concentrate | Sprayed, brushed or dipped; diluted to the film thickness you want; most economical per square metre | Pyrolube BN 5026 |
| Coat a cold mould and use it straight away | Solvent-based suspension | Dries in minutes at room temperature, no bake | Pyrolube 25S |
| Touch up a die between shots, or coat awkward geometry | Aerosol | Ready to use, even film in seconds, no mixing, no brush marks | BN aerosol spray |
| Make a compound conduct heat without conducting electricity | Powder | Functional filler for TIMs, potting resins, greases and plastics | h-BN powder |
| Feed an electrostatic dummy-block coater | Powder, free-flowing grade | Dry, meterable, good release | h-BN powder |
| Hold, pour or shape molten metal without it sticking | Solid BN part | The material itself rather than a film on someone else’s substrate | BN ceramics |
What Each Form Costs You, And What It Saves
| Form | Equipment | Skill needed | Cost per m² | Best at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aerosol | None | None | Highest | Small areas, touch-ups, trials | Large areas, every-cycle use |
| Suspension / concentrate | Spray gun or lance, brush or dip tank | Dilute and apply thin | Lowest | Large areas, every-cycle spraying, barriers | Hot tooling in the press |
| Wax stick | A holder | None | Low | Hot tooling, shears, seals, dies | Large areas |
| Powder | Compounding or electrostatic equipment | Formulation or metering | Depends on the system | Compounding, dusting, electrostatic coating | Anything that needs a liquid film |
Most Plants Use Two
Extruders pair Pyrolube 20 on the billet with wax sticks on the shear and seal. Casthouses pair a concentrate on launders and ladles with the aerosol on thermocouples and small tools. Die casters pair their water-based release agent with the BN aerosol on soldering-prone cores. Glass plants pair a bonded base coat with a light production top-up. One supplier for both halves keeps the chemistry compatible and the paperwork simple.
Common Questions
Can I dilute the aerosol or thin a wax stick?
No; each form is formulated for its application method. If you find yourself wanting a thinner aerosol, you need a suspension; if you want a stick that spreads further, you need the spray.
Which is cheapest?
Per square metre, the suspension or concentrate by a wide margin. Per trial, the aerosol or a carton of sticks, because nothing has to be set up.
Do all forms use the same boron nitride?
The same hexagonal material in grades chosen for the form: finer for thin films, coarser for thermal fillers and sticks. The oxidation limit and non-wetting behaviour are the same.
Can I start with the aerosol and move to the suspension later?
That is the usual path: prove the release with the aerosol or sticks, then move the high-volume duty to a suspension through a lance or dip tank.
