Pyrolube 20: Water-Based Boron Nitride Release Spray For Aluminium Extrusion
Pyrolube 20 is a water-based hexagonal boron nitride suspension made by Pyroflux India for spraying onto hot aluminium extrusion billets, dummy blocks and die faces. It carries 20–22% h-BN at a D50 below 10 µm, is silicone-free and carbon-free, and is diluted with water to the film thickness your press needs. On a billet surface at around 450 °C a short pass from a standard siphon spray lance leaves a dry, white, non-wetting film that stops aluminium sticking to the dummy block and container seal, with no acetylene soot, no graphite marks on the profile and no oil mist in the press area. It replaces graphite-in-oil pastes and imported water-based BN coatings on the same equipment, and ships from Noida in packs from 1 kg samples to 200 kg drums.

From The Technical Data Sheet
| Solid lubricant | Hexagonal boron nitride, 20–22% |
|---|---|
| Total solids | 20–25% |
| Carrier | Water |
| Specific gravity | 1.10–1.20 |
| Viscosity | 600–800 cP |
| pH | 7.0–9.0 |
| Particle size, D50 | Below 10 µm |
| Silicone / carbon | None |
| Appearance | White, free-flowing liquid |
| Pack sizes | 1 kg sample; 5, 20, 50 and 200 kg |
On The Press
| Dilution | Diluted with clean water; start at the ratio on the data sheet and move toward the thinnest film that still releases |
|---|---|
| Substrate | Billet surface and end, dummy block face, container seal, die face; clean and free of loose oxide |
| Temperature at application | Hot surfaces; billets are typically sprayed at 400–480 °C and the water flashes off on contact |
| Method | Siphon or airless spray lance, manual or solenoid-triggered; one short pass per billet |
| Typical cycle | A pass of about 1.5 seconds per billet on a press running a billet every 3 minutes |
| Storage | Keep from freezing; stir before use |
The existing two-tube siphon spray lance on most presses runs it as is. To automate, lock the lance trigger open and switch the compressed air upstream with a solenoid valve triggered by billet detection; Pyroflux can advise on the setup.
Pyrolube 20 Against The Usual Options
| Option | Film | Equipment | Cleanliness | Safety |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Acetylene soot | Carbon black | Sooter, gas | Poor: black marks, soot in press | Open flame, carcinogenic soot |
| Graphite-in-oil paste | Graphite + oil | Brush or swab | Poor: oil mist, black residue | Oil smoke |
| Imported water-based BN | Dry h-BN | Spray lance | Good | Water-based |
| Pyrolube 20 | Dry h-BN film | The lance you have | Good: white, dry | Water-based, silicone-free, non-toxic |
Common Questions
Can Pyrolube 20 replace graphite-in-oil paste on the dummy block?
Yes. It gives the same release on the same press with a white, carbon-free film, so profiles stop picking up black marks and the press area stays free of oil mist.
Does it need special spray equipment?
No. It runs through an ordinary two-tube siphon spray lance on shop compressed air; the lance can be automated with a solenoid valve on the air line and a billet sensor.
How is it different from the BN aerosol?
The aerosol is for touch-ups and small areas; Pyrolube 20 is the bulk, dilutable product for every billet on a running press.
Is it safe to handle?
It is water-based, silicone-free and non-toxic. The SDS covers handling, storage and disposal; request it with the TDS.
How much will I use?
Consumption depends on press size, dilution and spray time. Send us the press size and billets per shift and we will estimate it, or run a 20 kg trial pack and measure.
