Hexagonal vs Cubic Boron Nitride: Same Compound, Opposite Jobs

Boron nitride is one compound with two common crystal structures that behave like different materials. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has a layered, graphite-like structure; the layers shear easily, which makes it soft, slippery, white and the high-temperature solid lubricant and release agent used in extrusion, casting, forging and glass pressing. Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) has a diamond-like structure and is the second-hardest material in industrial use after diamond; it is sintered into cutting-tool inserts, grinding wheels and honing stones for hardened steel. The two are regularly confused in purchase orders and supplier directories, with expensive results. Pyroflux India makes and supplies hexagonal boron nitride products only: coatings, sprays, suspensions, wax sticks, powder and machined h-BN ceramics.

How To Make Sure You Are Buying The Right One

  • Check the word. A product for lubrication, release, coating or thermal filling is hexagonal. A product for machining or grinding is cubic. If the listing says only “boron nitride”, ask.
  • Check the form. h-BN comes as a white powder, a white liquid, an aerosol, a wax stick or a machinable white ceramic. c-BN comes as dark grit or a brazed insert.
  • Check the price. Cubic BN costs many times more per gram than hexagonal; a surprisingly high quote for a release agent usually means someone has looked up the wrong form.
  • Check the trade data. Import statistics for boron nitride mix both forms under one heading; anyone sizing the h-BN market from customs data has to strip out the c-BN inserts and grit first.
Why h-BN lubricates

The Layered Structure, In One Paragraph

In hexagonal boron nitride, boron and nitrogen atoms form flat hexagonal sheets stacked on top of one another. The bonds within a sheet are strong; the forces between sheets are weak, so the sheets slide over each other under shear. That sliding is the lubrication, and it works dry, in vacuum and in inert gas, which is where graphite, with the same layered structure, needs adsorbed moisture and loses its slip. Because the sheets are tightly bonded and the compound is chemically inert, molten aluminium, zinc, magnesium and glass do not wet the surface, which is the release behaviour. Cubic BN has none of this: its atoms are locked in a three-dimensional lattice, so it is hard, not slippery.

Frequently asked

Common Questions

Is white graphite the same as hexagonal boron nitride?

Yes. White graphite is the trade nickname for h-BN because it has graphite’s layered structure and lubricity with a white colour and a much higher oxidation limit.

Can cubic boron nitride be used as a lubricant?

No. It is an abrasive; using it where h-BN is intended would damage dies and moulds.

Does Pyroflux supply cubic boron nitride?

No. Pyroflux India makes and supplies hexagonal boron nitride products only.

Is there a third form?

There are others (wurtzite and rhombohedral BN, pyrolytic BN made by vapour deposition), but in industrial purchasing the choice is almost always between hexagonal and cubic.
