Boron Nitride Wax Sticks
Pyroflux India makes boron nitride wax sticks for one specific problem: lubricating tooling that is already hot and already in the press. A liquid flashes off or runs; a stick does not. The operator wipes the stick across the hot surface, it melts on contact, and it leaves an even white h-BN film exactly where it was applied. In aluminium extrusion this is the standard method for dummy blocks, billet ends, press shears, container seals and die faces, and it is also used on forging and hot-working dies. There is no spray equipment to maintain, no overspray to clean, no compressed air and nothing to change on the line, which makes a carton of sticks the cheapest way to trial boron nitride in an existing process.

The Stick
| Form | Solid stick — hexagonal boron nitride dispersed in a high-temperature wax carrier |
|---|---|
| Standard size | Approx. 65 mm diameter × 150 mm long; other sizes on request |
| Application | Wiped directly onto tooling at working temperature; melts and spreads without running or dripping |
| Carrier behaviour | The wax burns off cleanly at working temperature and leaves the h-BN film in place |
| Film | White, carbon-free, not wetted by aluminium |
| Typical uses | Extrusion dummy blocks, billet ends, press shears, container seals, die faces; forging and hot-working dies; hot shears and saws |
| Supplied as | Individual sticks; cartons; a simple hand holder is available so operators keep their hands away from the hot face |
Wipe, Watch It Melt, Press
- Hold the stick in the holder (or in a gloved hand on cooler tooling) and wipe it across the hot face: dummy block, billet end, shear blade or container seal.
- The stick melts on contact and spreads into an even film. One wipe per billet is typical for the dummy block; the shear needs less.
- Press. The wax carrier burns off cleanly and the h-BN film does the releasing.
- Adjust frequency by what you see: a dry, clean dummy block face means you can stretch the interval; aluminium pickup means wipe more often.
On presses that soot with acetylene or brush graphite-in-oil paste, sticks remove both the open flame and the black residue on the first shift, with no change to the press. For the billet surface itself on a fast press, pair the sticks with Pyrolube 20 through a spray lance.
Compared With The Alternatives On The Press
| Option | Film | Equipment | Cleanliness | Safety |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Acetylene soot | Carbon black | Sooter, gas | Poor: black marks on profiles, soot in the press | Open flame; carcinogenic soot |
| Graphite-in-oil paste | Graphite + oil | Brush | Poor: oil mist, black residue | Oil smoke |
| BN powder, electrostatic | Dry h-BN | Electrostatic gun, feeder | Good | Dust control needed |
| BN wax stick | h-BN in wax, wiped on hot tool | None | Good: white, dry | None |
| Water-based BN spray (Pyrolube 20) | Dry h-BN film | Siphon spray lance | Good | Water-based |
Common Questions
How long does one stick last?
It depends on press size and how often operators wipe. Extruders typically report a stick per shift on the dummy block of a mid-size press; we will estimate consumption from your press size and billets per shift.
Does the wax contaminate the profile?
No. The carrier burns off cleanly at the working temperature of the tooling and only the white, inert h-BN film remains; there is no carbon and no oil to mark the profile.
Can I use the stick on the die?
Yes. A light wipe on the die face and bearing eases the start of each billet and protects the die against corrosion in storage. For intricate bearings, the aerosol reaches better.
Do you supply a holder?
Yes. Pyroflux supplies a simple hand holder for the standard stick so the operator’s hand stays clear of the hot face. Ask for it with your first carton.
Can I have a different size?
Yes, within reason. Tell us the tooling and the holder you use today.
